Midway Village & Museum Center was named a recipient of a 2007 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Leadership in History Awards for 1900 Rockford: An American Chautauqua. The AASLH Leadership in History Award is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. Midway Village & Museum Center is one of only 72 organizations nationwide to receive this award and one of two 2007 Award of Merit winners in the State of Illinois. This marks the first time that any Rockford area museum has won an AASLH Leadership in History Award.

On September 14, 1928 a tornado ripped through Southeast Rockford. 14 people were killed, and more than 250 people injured. Hundreds of homes were damaged, as were the Rockford Chair and Furniture Factory, Union Furniture Company, and Elco Tool Company.

Among Rockford's notable citizens is Janet Lynn, a figure skater who represented the United States in the Olympic Games in 1968 and 1972.
