Spectacular Saturday Family Program
New Format for 2017
Hours  10:30 am – Noon

New Passport Program: A new passport program will encourage return visits to learn about a new country each month. To attend one program please pay the admission fee to the museum, but if you like the program and would like to return to any of the future spectacular Saturdays, you can purchase a passport for your child for 3 sessions for $20 (a 45% discount). With the 3 session passport, an adult is let in free with each passport holder.  Your child will get their very own passport booklet, and a stamp each time they visit. Members are always FREE.

In the month of March the passport is only valid for the Spectacular Saturday:  Morocco Program.  Tickets must be purchased separately to attend the Cultural Heritage Celebration special event.  Those who purchase tickets for the Cultural Heritage Celebration special event, may also attend the Spectacular Saturday Program.

2017 countries include: Switzerland, Morocco, Egypt, Chile, Australia, France, Turkey, Portugal, Mongolia, Thailand, and Iran.

January 21 –   Learn a  Japanese fan dance, practice your language skills, learn about Japanese culture, food and history, and try your hand at the traditional craft of wood block printing in this program.

You will join the museum’s historical interpreters to learn about the geography of Japan, what kinds of animals live there—like the Pika (the model for Pikachu), listen to traditional and modern music, and take a try to learn a traditional Japanese dance. Then we will be making wood block printings to take home. While the paint dries, join our interpreters for a guided tour of our Many Faces, One Community exhibit.

February 18 – Switzerland is famous for neutrality, the Alps, and chocolate. Children will look at the land, the culture, and arts of this country and will try their hand at molding some chocolate.

March 18 –Travel through Morocco’s famous tourist destinations and learn about its importance in history. Participants will also learn about art, culture and religion in Morocco and create a Hamsa Hand, also known as the Hand of Fatima, a symbol in both traditional Muslim and Jewish cultures

April 15 : Learn about Egyptian history, culture and art in this program. Learn Rockford’s connection to the famous King Tut and make some ancient Egyptian jewelry to take home.

May-We will be traveling to Chile to learn some of the language, art and culture of this South American nation in this month’s program. Learn about the rare semi-precious stone only mined in Chile and make some blue beaded jewelry to take home.

June 17 –We’re going down under this month to visit Australia. We will look at the unique animals and environment of this country as well as look its history. Participants will also make original art based on Aboriginal methods and symbols to take home.

July 15 – We’re traveling to France this month. We will investigate the art, culture, and food of this fabulous country. We will also try our hand at impressionist art like Monet.

August 19 – Travel to Turkey and learn about its Ottoman Empire past and what it’s like to live in Turkey today. Participants will also try Erbu-the Turkish art of marbling.

September 16 –Let’s head to the wonderful country of Portugal this month. Look at culture, art, language, dance and more in this program. We will then make Azulejos- blue geometric designed tiles common in Portugal.

October 14 –Let’s travel to the far off land of Mongolia this month. We will look at the culture, religion, and traditions. We will also make a Dark Old Man Mask which is used to scare away bad spirits in traditional folklore.

November 18 – Learn about language, music, food and culture as we study exotic Thailand. We will also create loi krathong-floating flower baskets—used to celebrate on the night of the full moon, when Thais launch their krathong on a river, canal or a pond, making a wish as they do so.

December 16 -As we travel to Iran we will learn about its Persian history, traditions, arts and cultural, and why this area is so important. We will try our hand at creating Tazhib, which is gilding beautiful patterned designs in gold.

Take I-90 to the State St / US-20 Business (Clock Tower) Exit. Take the ramp toward Rockford. Stay straight to go onto US-20 E State St. Turn RIGHT onto STATE ST. Turn RIGHT onto PERRYVILLE RD. Turn LEFT onto GUILFORD RD. Turn left into the museum driveway.
